A book about the son of a feminist woman is not a feminist book. That's the conclusion I reach after reading The World According to Garp by John Irving.

I was talking to a friend of mine about this book and I started describing some of the passages, she immediately said "That does not seem like a feminist book!" And she's right, it's more about a male writer that lives in a less mysoginistic enviroment that the rest of people. His life is a constant struggle between him living under mother's shadow (a portraited and quite famous femninist), a strong charactered wife and a trasgender woman best friend.

Published originally in 1978, the situations presented in the book are more plausible today than in the last century. It is a more valid story now, so It is more likely for the average person to encounter him or herself in situations described in the book.

Altough feminists characters and situations are very present, the story, I insist, it's more about the impact on Garp's life than anything else. Garp is still a regular human been and we see him through dark times, making huge mistakes, but we also get to root for him quite often through the book, sometimes he is a fool, then a victim, at times he's a role model and a hero; one thing he is not a simpleton.

It's a great interesting story and it's beautifully written by John Irving, definetly worth your reading time and much more.

Un libro sobre el hijo de una mujer feminista no es un libro feminista. Esa es la conclusión a la que llego después de leer El mundo según Garp de John Irving.

Estaba hablando con una amiga sobre este libro y comencé a describir algunos de los pasajes, ella inmediatamente dijo "¡Ese no parece un libro feminista!" Y tiene razón, se trata más de un escritor masculino que vive en un ambiente menos misógino que el resto de la gente. Su vida es una lucha constante entre él que vive bajo la sombra de su madre (una feminista retratada y bastante famosa), una esposa de carácter fuerte y una mejor amiga transgénero.

Publicado originalmente en 1978, las situaciones presentadas en el libro son más plausibles hoy que en el siglo pasado. Ahora es una historia más válida, por lo que es más probable que la persona promedio se encuentre en las situaciones descritas en el libro.

Si bien los personajes y situaciones feministas están muy presentes, la historia, insisto, se trata más del impacto en la vida de Garp que de otra cosa. Garp sigue siendo un ser humano normal y lo vemos a través de tiempos oscuros, cometiendo grandes errores, pero también lo apoyamos con bastante frecuencia a través del libro, a veces es un tonto, luego una víctima, a veces es un modelo a seguir y Un héroe; lo que no podemos llamarlo es sencillo.

Es una gran historia interesante y está bellamente escrita por John Irving, definitivamente vale la pena leerla y más aun.
